Summary

Although some of the characters and situations are fictionalized in this television version, the dialogue frequently draws directly from Aya Kitô's own words.

Except for the 32 new lawmakers, only four out of the 238 members of the House of Representatives are non-millionaires. The rest are multi-millionaires, with Las Piñas Rep. Cynthia Villar joining the Billionaires Club.

Of the four, 30-year-old Bohol Rep. Adam Relson Jala – a neophyte and a new lawyer – was the only administration lawmaker to join the ranks of non-millionaire opposition Reps. Satur Ocampo and Teddy Casiño of Bayan Muna and Rafael Mariano of Anakpawis.

Ocampo ranked 235th with P895,145 in assets with no liabilities; followed by Jala, P782,000 with no liabilities; Casiño with P118,900; and Mariano with only P55,501 in assets, and no liabilities.

Other militant lawmakers from the opposition bloc have made it to millionaires’ row, notably Gabriela party-list Reps. Liza Maza (P1.5 million) and Luzviminda Ilagan (P4.6 million), and Akbayan Rep. Risa Hontiveros who is worth P6.2 million.

The youngest House member, 27-year-old Sharee Ann Tan of Western Samar, is worth P2.1 million. The oldest legislator, 83-year-old Rep. Pablo Garcia of Cebu, has P31.5 million in assets with no liabilities.

"American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert's performance with rock band Queen on the finale of the TV singing contest this week has the British band thinking about a new front man.

"Amongst all that furor, there wasn't really a quiet moment to talk," Queen guitarist Brian May told Rolling Stone in an interview released on Friday.

"But and I are definitely hoping to have a meaningful conversation with at some point. It's not like we, as Queen, would rush into coalescing with another singer just like that. It isn't that easy. But I'd certainly like to work with Adam. That is one amazing instrument he has there," May told the magazine in an e-mail exchange.

Speaking separately, Lambert also reached out to May.

"Queen is one of my all-time favorite bands, I would love to work with him," he said in a conference call with reporters on Friday.

Queen, one of the biggest rock bands of the 1970s and '80s, has not had a permanent frontman since the death of Freddie Mercury in 1991.

The English band recently ended a four-year partnership with Paul Rodgers, the former lead singer in the bands Free and Bad Company.

Lambert, 27, dubbed "Glambert" by fans, lost out in the "American Idol" final to Kris Allen. But his vocal skills and flair for the dramatic made him a good fit for performances with both Queen and glam rockers KISS in the show's finale on Wednesday.

KISS bassist and vocalist Gene Simmons was less effusive about musical theater actor Lambert in the wake of the "Idol" final.

"Respectfully, I don't think Adam is a rock singer," Simmons wrote in a question-and-answer post on his website.

"He sounds much more convincing singing ballads, and Broadway shows," Simmons said. "His voice doesn't seem to have a 'rock quality.' But, I'm sure he's going to do just fine."

The director of Heath Ledger's final film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, says the late actor was more than just a cast member – he almost co-directed the movie.

"Heath was just brilliant at it, and he got everybody else going," Terry Gilliam said Friday at the Cannes Film Festival, where the movie premiered this week. "Everybody was just energized by Heath. He was extraordinary. He was almost exhausting because he had so much energy."

When Ledger died in January 2008 halfway into his performance, Gilliam said he had to "go out and find a way of finishing the film for Heath," the Associated Press reports. The solution: casting Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell to play incarnations of Ledger during the fantasy movie.

And while Ledger was replaced, he was not forgotten. At the end of the movie, there's a dedication: "A film from Heath Ledger and friends."

Philippines first H1N1 case confirmed by DOH

Health Secretary Dr. Francisco Duque III Thursday night confirmed the first case of Influenza A(H1N1) infection in the country—in a 10-year-old Filipino girl who arrived from the United States with her parents on May 18.

“The DoH confirms today the first case of AH1N1 in the Philippines. She is a female traveler who arrived in the country on May 18 from the United States, whose throat specimen tested positive based on results from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM),” Duque said.

Duque, who is in Geneva, Switzerland, attending a World Health Organization (WHO) meeting, held a video conference with reporters at the WHO regional office in Manila to break the news Thursday night.

“I talked with the president and from the tone of her voice she was very concerned. In fact, she gave me the go signal to conduct this press conference,” Duque added.

Dr. Eric Tayag of the Department of Health’s National Epidemiology Center said the girl, who was not identified, had also been to Canada.

The girl, he said, developed a fever, cough and sore throat on May 19, the day after arriving, and was brought to the RITM in Muntinlupa City where the diagnosis was confirmed Thursday.

Despite the index case, Duque said: “There is no community outbreak in the country, measures are being done to prevent transmission, including quarantine of immediate household of the first case. The first case is something we have been preparing for as a result of public and private sectors’ effective surveillance system.”

Health Undersecretary Mario Villaverde said the test results came Thursday afternoon from RITM and the patient was immediately given antiviral Oseltamivir.

The first case no longer had fever and cough but still has sore throat, said Villaverde.

Tayag said specimens from the index case will be sent to a WHO collaborating center in Melbourne as routine procedure for all specimens that will test positive for the novel AH1N1.

“The child developed the symptoms a day after arrival, so this is also a call for vigilance on the part of the public that people in the country and incoming travelers from abroad, especially from infected areas, submit themselves to quarantine screening and continuous monitoring of health, especially body temperature for 10 days, and to report to the DoH any flu-like symptoms,” said Villaverde.

Villaverde reiterated that the public should observe proper hygiene, strengthen resistance and do social distancing—avoid going to crowded areas if the need is not urgent.

Since there is only a single confirmed case, Villaverde said, there is no need to postpone the opening of schools in June.

Up till then the country had been flu-free despite the disease afflicting citizens of nearby countries like Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan.

In Geneva, a month after the world was alerted to a potential influenza pandemic, doubts fostered by the mild symptoms of the new swine flu virus have prompted the WHO to think twice about sounding the maximum alarm despite the spread of infection in 41 countries.

The WHO on Thursday raised its tally of swine flu cases around the world to 11,034 and 85 deaths. Most of the 791 new cases have been reported in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Mexico confirmed three more deaths linked to the A(H1N1) virus, while the United States confirmed two additional deaths since Wednesday’s tally.

‘Imminent pandemic’
At least 38 other countries in the Americas, Asia and Europe have reported cases since the outbreak in Mexico, but the world remains at flu alert level five, signaling an “imminent pandemic.”

WHO Director General Margaret Chan is hesitant about declaring a fully fledged pandemic by moving to Phase 6, even though travelers have carried the virus to other continents.

The maximum alert level would indicate sustained community transmission in a second region outside the Americas.

On Thursday, Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso reiterated his appeal for calm as the number of swine flu infections in his country soared to 292, including the first two cases in Tokyo, the world’s largest urban area.

Antoine Flahaut, an epidemiologist and head of the School of Public Health (EHESP), said that the technical elements were in place to move into the pandemic phase.

“But the WHO senses that recommendations which go with that are not adapted to the situation,” Flahaut explained, pointing to air travel restrictions or advice to wear surgical masks.

“Invoking phase six would be disproportionate with the current situation,” he added.

The doubts have grown because of the relatively mild symptoms of swine flu, which experts acknowledge is no worse than seasonal influenza for now.

Many of the deaths have occurred among those who were suffering from other ailments, a common pattern for ordinary strains of flu.

When the WHO’s annual assembly opened on Monday, British Health Secretary Alan Johnson voiced doubts about phase six that had been growing behind the scenes after countries rushed to contain new cases of swine flu.

More time needed
“I think you, as you and others have said, need more time, we need more time to study this,” Johnson told Chan, prompting nods of approval from other health officials afterward, including China, Japan and New Zealand.

“She (Chan) has taken that on board,” WHO spokesperson Thomas Abraham said late Thursday, underlining that most of the cases in Japan were largely confined to students or their close entourage.

Chan acknowledged earlier this week that the WHO’s pandemic response plan, introduced three years ago, was largely designed around the more deadly and virulent, but less transmissible, H5N1 bird flu virus.

“This scale was based on geographical distribution, but the public belief is that pandemic means seriousness,” said Sylvie Briand, acting director of the WHO’s Global Influenza Program.

But the WHO is also looking ahead at the potential progress of the new virus, and fears of its impact in poor countries, where millions of people are already weakened by chronic illness.

“Whatever the member states might say, we are in phase five,” Abraham pointed out.

Similar to 20th century
In studies released by the New England Journal of Medicine, scientists pointed out the similarities between the new A(H1N1) virus and ones behind pandemics that marked the 20th century.

Those pandemics in 1918-1919—which killed an estimated 50 million people—in 1957-1963 and 1968-1970 started off as mild but went through waves that became more lethal at their peak, often the second season, and had different impacts in different regions.

The viruses also affected young people—a feature underlined by the WHO in the current outbreak—and were highly transmissible, according to researchers from the US National Institutes of Health and George Washington University. Reports from Agence France-Presse and Associated Press.

Specifically, a gold-plated Nintendo Wii, courtesy of publisher THQwhich hopes to lure Her Majesty and her own extended family into a few endless nights of waggle-induced fun.

Encased in gold and accompanied by a copy of the company's latest family-friend release, BIG Family Games, appropriately enough. So says THQ product manager Danielle Robinson of the royal present:

A certain Erik Johnston Chua was identified by Optical Media Board (OMB) chairman Edu Manzano as the person allegedly behind the leak of the controversial sex video involving doctor-turned-celebrity Hayden Kho and young actress Katrina Halili.

Based on the initial reports, Chua reportedly asked for P2 million from distributors in exchange for the five sex videos. The hefty amount, Manzano said, was ridiculous given the usual trade practice of video merchandise in the market.

Edu claimed that blockbuster Hollywood movies would only cost P50,000 at maximum rate. He added that this only showed Chua's lack of knowledge in terms of dealing with distributors.

Authorities suspect that Chua was reportedly the same person who uploaded the illicit videos on the Internet.

This development lifted the spirits of Katrina. In a text message sent to PEP at 10:03 p.m., she said: "Ang korte at ang Diyos na po ang bahala sa kanila."

WHO HAS THE SEX VIDEOS? The latest update posted by GMA-7 News reported that NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) had issued a subpoena to Hayden Kho, Erik Johnston Chua—including famous cosmetic surgeon Vicki Belo, who is Kho's ex-girlfriend—for questioning.

NBI assistant regional director Vicente de Guzman III said that Belo was also asked to appear before the investigators at NBI office tomorrow, May 22, to shed light on reports saying that she herself has copies of the video.

"Tatanungin namin kung bakit meron siyang kopya at kung saan ito nakuha," De Guzman points out.

Katrina filed a complaint against Kho yesterday, May 20, at the NBI office, where she was accompanied by Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla and her lawyers. The actress likewise asked the PRC (Philippine Regulatory Commission) to revoke Kho's medical license.

I said that I wanted Kris to make me fail — and he did! We were in total jinx mode from the very beginning and I had Kris leaving or in the bottom 3 since Top 13. I’m shock that it worked! Wayne Allwine, the actor who voiced Mickey Mouse for more than 30 years, has died.

The Walt Disney Co. says Allwine died Monday of complications from diabetes, with Russi Taylor, his wife of 20 years and the voice of Minnie Mouse, by his side. He was 62.

"Wayne dedicated his entire professional life to Disney," chief executive Robert Iger said in a statement Wednesday. "Over the last 32 years, (he) gave so much joy, happiness and comfort to so many around the world by giving voice to our most beloved, iconic character, Mickey Mouse."

A Southern California native, Allwine joined Disney in 1966 when he took a job in the mail room. He went on to work in the sound effects department and began voicing the company's main mouse in 1977.

His falsetto can be heard in 1983's "Mickey's Christmas Carol," 1988's "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and at Disney theme parks around the world. He won an Emmy Award in 1986 for his sound editing on the NBC series "Amazing Stories."

Allwine was the third man behind Mickey's voice. The first was Disney himself, then Jimmy MacDonald, who became Allwine's mentor and passed him the reins after voicing the mouse for 30 years.

"He said, 'Just remember kid, you're only filling in for the boss,'" Allwine once recalled. "And that's the way he treated doing Mickey for years and years."

"Mickey's the real star," Allwine continued. "You know you just have to love the little guy while you have him, because he won't be yours forever."

Roy E. Disney, director emeritus for The Walt Disney Co., said Allwine did more than give Mickey a voice. He "gave him a heart and soul as well."

"He did an incredible job of bringing emotion, humor and appeal to the character, and superbly carried on the tradition originated by my Uncle Walt, and later by sound-effects wizard Jimmy Macdonald."

Besides Taylor, Allwine is survived by five children from a previous marriage: Erin, Alison, Peter, Christopher and Joshua.

Together Through Life is the 33rd studio album by Bob Dylan, released on April 28, 2009, on Columbia Records. The album debuted #1 in various countries, including the US and the UK and is Dylan's first #1 in Britain since New Morning in 1970.

As with most Dylan albums before Together Through Life, Dylan has adapted lyrics from other songs and incorporated them into his own lyrics. The phrase "If you ever go to Houston, you better walk right" is taken from the folk song "Midnight Special". Dylan plays harmonica on Harry Belefonte's 1962 recording of the song.

Summary
